| The Aga Khan Foundation (AKF), part of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), is a private, not-for-profit, non-denominational, international development agency established in 1967 by His Highness the Aga Khan. AKF’s mission is to provide sustainable solutions to long-term problems of poverty, hunger, illiteracy and ill health in the poorest parts of South and Central Asia, Eastern and Western Africa, and the Middle East. The Aga Khan Foundation works actively in 19 countries, with special emphasis on the needs of rural communities in mountainous, coastal and other resource-poor areas. It seeks to mobilise effective short and long-term development solutions for those in most need either via its own units or with its partners and affiliates. | ![]() |
Over the years AKF has invested in local communities, enabling them to gain the confidence and competence to participate in the design, implementation and continuing operation of activities that affect the quality of their lives. AKF takes an integrated approach to development across five thematic areas – rural development, health, education, the environment and the strengthening of civil society.
AKF promotes a community-based approach that strengthens the capacity of local institutions and respects local culture. Its activities are guided by the convictions that self-help brings dignity and self-respect, which in turn helps realise human potential. In 2010, AKF funded 322 projects in more than 18 countries. Activities ranged from building wells, irrigation channels, roads and bridges to establishing schools and developing curriculum to implementing water and sanitation schemes, training community health workers and providing pharmaceuticals. |
